Trouble with the post office is always unpleasant, but the difficulties can often be easily resolved. It’s different in Bavaria: there, a postman stole packages and letters for months – his loot is worth several thousand euros.

A postman from Upper Bavaria seems to have regularly embezzled small packages and a large number of letters. According to the investigation, his thieving tours have been going on for some time: the man is said to have stolen mail from the post office in Mammendorf at the end of 2021 – a lucrative side income, as a search of the apartment has now revealed.

The man was targeted by his employer during a quality control by Deutsche Post. When another mail went missing on Tuesday, the 38-year-old was caught red-handed by postal security staff and asked about it. The postman then fled, which was of no use to him: the police who were called found the man in his apartment.

Bavaria: Valuable technology and 2000 letters disappeared

When his backpack was searched, the first thing that came to light was the package that had disappeared the same day. The actual buyer would have expected an expensive shipment: According to the police, the package contained a high-quality mobile phone. The officers then found other small electronic devices and their packaging during a search of the apartment of the suspected letter carrier, which are also said to come from embezzlement. The proud sum for the technology: around 5000 euros.

The extent of the embezzlement of simple letters is also remarkable: in the last few months, the thieving postman snatched around 2,000 letters. The letters found in his apartment are now to be delivered by the man’s colleagues afterwards.
