Earlier, the governors appointed by Russia announced that they had passed a law to hold such a referendum.

The equally self-proclaimed “People’s Republic” of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine also wants to hold a referendum on joining Russia. The vote will also be held from September 23 to 27, the People’s Assembly said.

The simultaneous referendums are seen as a reaction to the current Ukrainian counter-offensive in the east of the country.
