Portugal: Big Wave surfers race down huge waves (video)

That takes courage: big wave surfers race down huge waves in a competition in Portugal

Impressive breakers off Portugal’s coast. On Thursday, the best big wave surfers in the world met at Nazaré for a competition. Among the winners of the contest were the Brazilian Lucas Chianca and his partner Nic von Rupp, a Portuguese with German roots. The surf spot Nazaré is world-famous in the scene and impresses on days like these, when the waves are around 15 meters high. The mountains of water are then so huge that the surfer, as is usually the case, can no longer paddle them alone. Therefore, surfers use jet skis to be drawn into the waves.
