“Rock, snotty and opera” – that’s how Timea Göghova describes herself in a few words. The 42-year-old has already covered heavy metal songs in the operatic voice, co-founded the jazz-funk band Passion Control and recently started an RnB solo project. Now she has made it into the blind auditions of the casting show “The Voice of Germany” and can be seen on Sat 1 on Sunday at 8:15 pm. Above all, she wants to score points there with her versatility. “I love to slip into different roles,” says the singer. You can see her with a blonde wig, corsage and Venetian mask or a black leather jacket.
During the day, however, she usually wears a suit, because Göghova works full-time at the Haar Adult Education Center as the head of the German and Integration Department. Here the studied foreign language teacher began teaching German at the facility in 2006, and then took on more and more organizational tasks. Many of her colleagues are enthusiastic about her musical sideline. At the Volkshochschule’s summer festival, she already played with her melodic metal band Still Awake and with her jazz-funk band Passion Control. “Some were surprised that Metal doesn’t sound as hard as they imagined, but can also be melodic and emotional,” she says of the performance. However, many of her colleagues do not yet know that she will be seen and heard on The Voice of Germany on Sunday.
By applying to the casting show, she wanted to face a new challenge. With her melodic metal band she already took part in the Emergenza band competition and won the southern German final. The second big stage experience should now be the TV appearance. She does not have to win, but hopes to be able to participate in at least one round in the live shows. She has already survived several preliminary rounds, practicing cover singing for about a year. The singer had to learn that again, because with her band she usually performs songs that she wrote herself. “It took me real practice to present songs from other performers.” She is not yet allowed to reveal which hit she sings on Sunday.
But making music her main job is not an option for her, especially after the pandemic year 2020. Nevertheless, the music still falls short in her life, which gives her an important balance in everyday life. It can discharge energy, especially through metal music. “It’s really like sport to sing for so long and sometimes to scream”, said Göghova.
