Can I prepare porridge in the microwave?

In most recipes it is written that you should heat the porridge in a saucepan on the stove. But what if time is short or you don’t have a stove available and only have a microwave in the office kitchen, for example? Can you also prepare your porridge in the microwave? We can answer the question with a resounding yes.

Basic recipe: How to prepare your porridge in the microwave

Oatmeal from the microwave is quick to prepare and requires only a few ingredients and a few simple steps.

For one serving you will need

  • approx. 50 grams of rolled oats (5 tablespoons)
  • approx. 100 ml (plant) milk or water
  • 1 tsp honey or agave syrup for sweetening
  • Handful of nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts or almonds) and chopped fruit for topping (berries, apples, pears, bananas) and 1 tsp seeds (linseed or chia seeds)
  • 1 microwaveable bowl

Add the rolled oats, liquid, and honey or agave nectar to your bowl and mix well to form a paste. Place the bowl in your microwave and heat on high for about 2 minutes. Stir your oatmeal every 30 seconds so the mass is heated evenly. Caution: The bowl can get hot, use a kitchen towel or oven mitt when removing your bowl from the microwave.

Finally, when your porridge has reached the desired temperature, you can top it with delicious nuts, seeds and fruit.

Porridge in the microwave: It depends on the right flakes

If you want to heat your porridge in the microwave, you should ideally use tender oatmeal. Why? In contrast to pithy oat flakes, these are thinner and therefore softer more quickly. Crunchy oat flakes therefore need longer in the microwave to get a softer consistency.

Is it unhealthy to prepare porridge in the microwave?

No, you don’t need to worry about preparing your porridge in the microwave. The microwave heats the food by generating microwaves, which vibrate the water molecules in the food, thereby generating heat. This process does not significantly alter the nutrients in the food any differently than other cooking methods.

It’s important to note that all cooking methods can have some impact on the nutrients in the food, especially heat-sensitive vitamins. But cooking oatmeal in the microwave is a quick and convenient method that’s generally considered safe and healthy.
