NFT influencer CryptoNovo announced on Jan. 4 that he had been the victim of a cyberattack and lost two CryptoPunks. He wrote on Twitter, “I just got hacked!!! Is this a joke!?!” and posted a screenshot from OpenSea showing two CryptoPunks being transferred to a different wallet address.
Both CryptoPunks were immediately sold by someone who stole them. One was sold for 70 Ether (ETH) ($88,434 at time of publishing) and the other for 199 ETH ($251,404), meaning CryptoNovo lost over $300,000 worth of CryptoPunks in the attack.
CryptoNovo has more than 18,000 followers on Twitter and is known for wearing a mask that makes him look like the green hat-wearing CryptoPunk he first bought in 2020.
Although CryptoNovo claims to have been “hacked,” Twitter user Proper pointed out that the most likely cause was phishing after the CryptoPunk green hat was transferred to a secure address. multiple tokens to an unknown smart contract whose contract implements the function “transferFrom” in various NFTs to transfer them from their wallet. This means that someone could trick him into allowing a malicious DApp to migrate his own tokens.
