Tina Turner wrote music history with her songs. A song that was awarded a Grammy exactly 50 years ago represents a particularly important step in her life.

For the rock singer Tina Turner, the song “Proud Mary” is the key song of her career. “Without Mary, as I affectionately call the song, I would never have become the artist I am,” said the 82-year-old to the musical organizer Stage Entertainment in Hamburg.

First and foremost, she associates “Proud Mary” with freedom. “Freedom to decide what I want to sing and ultimately the freedom to follow my own path as an artist.”

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 14, 1972, she received her first Grammy for the interpretation of the song written by John Fogerty. She heard the song on the radio at the time and really wanted to record it. «The success and the award with the Grammy have proved me right!».

The song is also part of the Tina Turner musical “Tina”, which will be played at the Hamburg Stage Operettenhaus until the summer before it premieres in Stuttgart in March 2023. “It makes me proud that the song is played every night all over the world in my musical and I’m happy how much this song sweeps away and touches the audience at every “Tina” performance!”
