“Poor Things” as the start of Retro Lanthimos & Tsangari at the Munich Film Museum – Munich

It is probably Bella’s mixture of naivety and audacity that fascinates the audience: the young woman with the brain of an unborn child takes and gives more than her fellow human beings, she wants to hit screaming babies, speaks to men about their bodily fumes and grabs women’s crotch (“She grabbed my hairy business!”). “Poor Things” won the Golden Lion at the Venice festival, and there were four prize trophies at the Oscars (including for the leading actress Emma Stone). The film has been running successfully in cinemas for months, currently in Munich Maxim and in the Museum of Light Plays.

The Film Museum is also showing “Poor Things” (on April 12th and 13th), which is the start of the retrospective “Lanthimos & Tsangari”. The Greek Yorgos Lanthimos made a name for himself in 2015 with his bizarre and brutally funny animal transformation satire “The Lobster” He attracted international attention with films such as “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”, “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” and became the favorite director of stars such as Colin Farrell, Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone. The film museum also shows Lanthimos’ early work from Greece. And this is where his compatriot Athina Rachel Tsangari comes into play: The two have known each other for many years; she produced his films “Kinetta”, “Alpen” and “Dogtooth”, and he starred in her directorial work “Attenberg”. The “New Greek Wave” that they co-founded has long since spilled over into international cinema.
