“Pond, James Pond” … China parodies Agent 007 on Twitter, mocks the British

China also knows how to show a lot of humor … The country’s official news agency, “New China”, published this week
on Twitter [réseau social pourtant bloqué en Chine] a parody video mocking the anti-Chinese alliance between London and Washington, titled “Laughter Can Wait”, in reference to the title of Agent 007’s latest film.

The 4.35-minute clip features two Chinese actors playing agents from MI6, the British spy service: a man in a tuxedo called “James Pond” with a “P” and not a “B” (“Pond” means “pond” in English), and another agent in a suit. In this laugh-filled video recorded and filmed in a castle, the two agents mock Western criticism of the supposed Chinese threat.

In this clip posted on social networks, the two fake British agents discuss in particular a file listing Chinese espionage techniques… before realizing that they are in fact those of their American ally. James Pond then denounces the “pathetic” criticism of MI6 against Beijing, a tactic used according to him “to obtain a big budget next year”.

” Thank you for your interest “

The boss of the British secret service ironically thanked the “New China” news agency on Thursday for this “free publicity”. “Thank you for your interest (and the unexpected free publicity!),” Responded Richard Moore. The MI6 boss also posted a link to his November speech, where he accused Chinese agents of “exploiting the open nature” of British society “to facilitate their operations.”

The response from Richard Moore, head of British foreign intelligence (MI6) comes amid tensions between the United Kingdom and China over the Uyghurs and the political takeover of Hong Kong. In a rare public address at the end of November, he declared that “adapting to a world affected by the rise of China is the highest priority” of his services. The MI6 chief accused Beijing in particular of “collecting data from around the world” and “using its influence” to “catch people in its nets”.

In 2020, the British government had already decided to exclude Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei from the 5G network, after American warnings about potential espionage from Beijing.
