Politicians in railway carriages and the visibility problem of Ukraine – Culture

A picture went around the world: politicians in a wagon on their way to Eastern Europe. But this one does not bring Lenin to Russia, but Macron, Scholz and Draghi, the EU leaders to Ukraine. It is neither about peace nor about revolution, but about adjusting the balance of power in view of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. In the history of Europe, trains have played a particularly sinister role as instruments of states’ power over people’s destinies, most dramatically where the population itself is transported. Now, however, trains are apparently being re-rolled as places of sovereignty in Central Europe.
