Police operation in Dresden: Raid after death threat against Kretschmer

Status: December 15, 2021 7:11 a.m.

A week ago, murder plans against the Saxon Prime Minister Kretschmer became known – expressed by members of a Telegram chat group. The police and special forces of the LKA have now searched several objects.

The State Criminal Police Office of Saxony has launched a raid in Dresden because of threats against the Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer (CDU) on Telegram. Several objects were searched, the police said on Twitter.

The background is the murder plans against Kretschmer in connection with the decisions of the state government to contain the corona pandemic, which were discussed in a chat group on the messenger service Telegram.

According to the police, the search measures were carried out with the participation of special forces from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), as statements by individual members of the Telegram group suggested that they might be in possession of sharp weapons and crossbows.

As the authority further announced, the special right-wing extremism commission (Soko Rex) has issued search warrants as part of a preliminary investigation on suspicion of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. The investigation became known a week ago.

Association of cities calls for better protection for politicians

In the past few days, numerous politicians and security authorities had warned of a further radicalization of the so-called lateral thinker movement and called for the authorities to take consistent action against unregistered demonstrations. Most recently, a torch lift by opponents of the Corona measures in front of the private home of the Saxon Minister of Health Petra Köpping (SPD) caused a stir.

In view of the increasing radicalization of corona deniers, the chief executive of the Association of Towns and Municipalities, Gerd Landsberg, called for better protection for local politicians. “The police protection that federal and state politicians experience must of course also apply to threatened local politicians if there is a corresponding risk situation,” Landsberg told the “Rheinische Post”. “However, many of our mayors do not always feel sufficiently protected from radicalized citizens.” Landsberg warned that local politicians could give up because of the “heated situation”.
