After the killing of a police officer in northern Kosovo, Prime Minister Kurti speaks of terror. Tensions have worsened this year in the ethnic Serb-majority region.
A police officer was killed in a shootout in northern Kosovo. The government in Pristina said another official was injured.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti described the incident as terrorism. “The attackers are professionals who wear masks and are heavily armed,” Kurti wrote on Facebook.
Details about the shooting or the motives of the perpetrators were not initially known.
Serbian minority does not recognize government
While 90 percent of Kosovo’s population are ethnic Albanians, there is a majority of ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo. The ethnic Serb population does not recognize the government in Pristina of the state of Kosovo, which has been independent from Serbia since 2008.
This conflict intensified further this year and has already led to violent riots. In May, 50 ethnic Serbs and 90 NATO soldiers were injured. NATO has stationed around 4,000 soldiers in the Balkan country to ensure peace.
