Verena Altenberger is giving up her role to Elisabeth “Bessie” Eyckhoff. Is your last “police call 110: paranoia” worth it?

Since September 2019, Verena Altenberger (35) has been seen as an investigator as Elisabeth “Bessie” Eyckhoff in Munich’s “Polizeiruf 110”. But last year it became known: the actress is giving up her role. Now her sixth and last case is flickering on the television screens with “Polizeiruf 110: Paranoia” (June 11, 8:15 p.m., the first). In it, Eyckhoff is on to something bigger – but she has to deal with strange circumstances. What is reality and what is an illusion? This is exactly what not only the investigator but also the viewer is trying to find out.

That’s what “Police Call 110: Paranoia” is about

The paramedic Sarah Kant (Marta Kizyma, born 1994) is called to an emergency together with her colleague Carlo Melchior (Timocin Ziegler, 37). They take the badly injured woman to the hospital. The next day, Sarah learns that this woman was not admitted as a patient. Confused, Sarah tries to reach Carlo, but he is found dead in his apartment.

What happened that night? Commissioner Elisabeth “Bessie” Eyckhoff and her colleague Dennis Eden (Stephan Zinner, 48) want to reconstruct the events of the night. An exciting game of truth and deception begins…

Is it worth turning on?

Absolutely! Not just because it’s Altenberger’s last case. The new “Polizeiruf 110” from Munich combines almost all the elements that make a successful thriller: wit, action, a few thriller elements and a surprising ending. In this case, Verena Altenberger once again shows how well she suits the role of Commissioner Bessie. Because once again the investigator appears with a lot of empathy, gives everything and is unpredictable in her decisions – which keeps the tension high throughout the film.

With “Polizeiruf 110: Paranoia” the name says it all – because until the end you doubt in front of the screen what is truth and what is imagination. Marta Kizyma brilliantly embodies the paramedic Sarah Kant, who is close to the abyss. Is she imagining everything, is she ill or is she sane and on the trail of something big? That’s exactly what Bessie and her colleague Dennis Eden want to find out. In general, the ensemble seems harmonious and plays very well together – you buy everything from those involved and are surprised at the direction in which the characters develop.

When it comes to the script, there is a sad background: writer Claus Cornelius Fischer (1951-2020) died unexpectedly in December 2020 and left behind the template for “Paranoia”. Screenwriter Martin Maurer finally took care of it. “I wanted to expand on what I read from the text, what I thought I understood about Claus Cornelius Fischer’s personality, his ideas and, above all, his sense of humour, and deepen it in his spirit across the various versions of the script,” explains the author the transmitter. This “police call” was also a special job for director Tobias Ineichen (59): “It was extremely exciting for me to be able to accompany Verena on her last assignment as Munich Commissioner Eyckhoff great joy and honor.”

Unfortunately, at some point towards the end, it becomes clear that this is the last time Verena Altenberger has been seen calling the police. Jump down somewhere for the last time and push yourself to the limit – even physically. “Bessie, I will miss you,” the broadcaster quoted the actress’ greetings to the Munich investigator as early as April. The Austrian actress and the broadcaster made it public in the summer of 2022 that she would quit her job in the Sunday crime format. But not only Altenberger will miss the character, but also guarantees some fans of the series. Because her unconventional nature and the extraordinary cases have brought a breath of fresh air to the crime world. In the end there is only one thing left to say: Take care Bessie, we will miss you too.
