It’s been a year since Jaroslaw Kaczynski resigned from his post in the Polish government. Now the PiS chairman is returning: Poland’s President Duda has appointed him Deputy Prime Minister.
The leader of the national-conservative ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is again occupying an important position in the Polish cabinet. He was appointed deputy prime minister by President Andrzej Duda, Polish news agency PAP reported. The move had been speculated for a long time. Mateusz Morawiecki (also PiS) remains prime minister.
Four so far deputy prime ministers in Poland
Government spokesman Piotr Müller told the PAP agency that Kaczynski would be the only deputy prime minister after he was sworn in. Kaczynski had previously been deputy prime minister but resigned a year ago.
So far there have been four deputy prime ministers in Poland. Müller announced that the others had given up this function, but would remain ministers. Shortly before the parliamentary elections in autumn, Kaczynski will once again play a central role in the cabinet. The exact date is not fixed yet.
According to polls, the PiS has a good chance of winning the election again. It is in constant dispute with the EU Commission, mainly because of the restructuring of the judiciary. Most recently, however, Poland has made a name for itself as a supporter of neighboring Ukraine, which has been fighting a Russian war of aggression for almost 16 months.
