Poland: Hate speech against the LGBT community in the Sejm – opinion

The ruling party PiS and other fanatics want to take legal action against homosexuals. Millions of Poles who don’t want to live and love like the fanatics have experienced another black day.

It was a new low point in Polish politics when ultra-conservative fanatics established the “Stop LGBT” draft law in parliament on Thursday evening: It should ban Poland’s gays, lesbians and other sexual minorities from all rainbow parades and public appearances.

Co-author Krzysztof Kasprzak compared the advocacy of sexual minorities for their rights with the march to power of the SA and NSDAP in the early 1930s. Their work is directed towards the destruction of the family and is on a par with a terror campaign such as that carried out by fascists and communists in the past. Kasprzak and his colleague Kaja Godek never missed a horror story about homosexuals, such as the fact that they raped and abused children.

The fact that these hate speeches by fanatics were heard in parliament with impunity is just one scandal. The other is: The anti-LGBT project came about with the support of the Catholic Church. The ruling party PiS put it on the agenda – and confirmed in parliament that it would not reject the project, but rather continue to work on it. Even if the draft does not become law: the damage is enormous. The already widespread discrimination against sexual minorities in Poland is likely to increase. And often enough words of deadly violence prepare the ground. Millions of Poles who don’t want to live and love like the fanatics have experienced another black day.
