Time: December 1st, 2023, from 1:00 p.m.; Location: Hamburg St. Pauli

Today the city derby in the 2nd Bundesliga took place between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV. The Hamburg police were deployed with a large contingent.

The relationship between the two fan groups is characterized by a high degree of emotionality, which led to a hostile classification in the police assessment. Because of this, the Hamburg police supervised the encounter with a strong contingent.

In the run-up to the encounter, both FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV supporters held fan marches.

At around 3:00 p.m. the first participants in the St. Pauli fan march gathered in Susannenstrasse/Shoulderblatt, which started moving around 3:50 p.m. At its peak, around 3,000 people took part, who finally reached the entrance areas at Budapester Strasse and the stadium row around 4:25 p.m. Pyrotechnics were occasionally used.

The first participants in the HSV fan march arrived at the St. Pauli Fish Market at 2:30 p.m. and set off at around 3:00 p.m. Around 4:15 p.m., around 3,000 participants reached the stadium’s guest entrance in the Feldstrasse area. Here too, pyrotechnics were used sporadically, especially at the beginning of the fan march.

Both fan marches were accompanied by police forces and ran smoothly overall.

As planned, spectators began to enter at 4:30 p.m.; The game was kicked off by the referee promptly at 6:30 p.m. Shortly beforehand, both St. Pauli and HSV continued to use pyrotechnics in the initial choreographies. Fireworks were set off almost constantly throughout the entire season.

After the game, the Hamburg police successfully implemented the tried and tested security concept again.

The HSV fans left the stadium via Feldstrasse, where another fan march formed a short time later. This ran again under police escort from Feldstrasse over the Holstenwall and finally to the Reeperbahn. The former participants of the march, which numbered almost 600 people, then went to the entertainment district.

The supporters of FC St. Pauli left the stadium via the exits on Budapester Straße and went to their well-known fan bars. There was no closed fan march like on the way there.

The Hamburg police carried out operations surrounding the football game today with over 1,700 police officers and were supported by around 500 officers from the federal states of Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin and the Federal Police.

Valid figures on investigations initiated, arrests and detentions, and possible injuries were not available at the time the press release was prepared.

Sandra Levgrün:

“Our security concept, which at its core involves strict separation of fans, has proven itself. Despite the high level of emotion, our emergency services used the necessary professionalism to prevent the rival groups from clashing. This made it possible to prevent criminal offenses, threats and even injuries, especially to third parties . The rivalry was played out on the pitch in purely sporting terms – that’s a good signal.”
