A palm-sized poisonous spider caused a stir in a supermarket in Krefeld.

The employees of a food discounter in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, have made an unexpected discovery. The fire department said the staff discovered “a palm-sized spider” in a banana box from the Dominican Republic. The employees reacted in an exemplary manner and packed the box, including bananas and spider, securely in a plastic bag.

Spider handed over to animal rescue service

The fire brigade control center meanwhile sent a reptile expert to the supermarket. Because the employees also photographed the exotic animal, it was quickly identified as a warm house giant crab spider, it was said. This is native to South American regions.

After photographing the spider, they packed the box in a plastic bag and alerted the fire department. A bite from this genus is poisonous but not fatal. The spider was moved to a transport box from the fire department and handed over to an animal rescue service.
