The verdict in the security procedure for the poison attack at the Technical University (TU) Darmstadt was pronounced at the Darmstadt Regional Court on Tuesday. Accordingly, the 33-year-old, mentally ill suspect must initially be accommodated indefinitely in a closed psychiatric ward.

With the verdict, the court followed the public prosecutor’s office and one of the two defense lawyers. They had pleaded for the accommodation of the former student from Mainz.

The chamber refused to suspend her for outpatient therapy on probation, as requested by the other defense attorney. “The accused is not that far,” said the presiding judge.

diagnosed schizophrenia

Doctors had diagnosed the woman with paranoid schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations. She has been in a psychiatric clinic since the beginning of September 2021.

Therefore, it was not a classic criminal process, but a security procedure. It was therefore not possible to impose a fine or imprisonment on the woman. The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The 33-year-old had confessed in court that on the night of August 23, 2021 on the Lichtwiese campus in the tea kitchens she had given a mixture of chemicals in milk, honey and water for coffee and tea. Seven people swallowed the chemicals, and a 30-year-old man was briefly in mortal danger.

Suspect denies intent to kill

The woman had felt persecuted by members of the department because of her psychosis, which was also shown in letters she had written. Investigators found them.

That’s why you wanted to “teach your colleagues a lesson,” the defense attorney read from the statement. She had assumed that the bromoaniline she used, among other things, was harmless in small doses. She denied the charge of attempted murder.

In the meantime, she had realized that she was ill, the accused had the court explain further. Since taking medication, she no longer hears voices and no longer feels persecuted.
