Richard Wagner’s four-part opera “The Ring of the Nibelung” is a treasure trove for every criminal lawyer. First Alberich steals the gold from the Rhinemaidens, then Wotan takes it from him, reluctantly paying the two giants for their building work with it, one killing the other: the first murder. Fraud, more murders, incest, coercion follow. There are enough legal and less legal treatises on this, probably Loriot’s being the best. Now you can hear a new voice: that of Angela Merkel. Although she is a trained physicist, not a lawyer, she was Chancellor for 16 years. In the summer she made a pilgrimage to Bayreuth for even longer, her husband infected her with the Wagner virus. So she knows about power and the “Ring” and now proves it in the “True Crime Podcast” by SWR2.
