Podcast “Munich personally”: On the trail of the “white rose” – Munich

It is 80 years since the siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl and their friend Christoph Probst were arrested and executed in Munich. The members of the “White Rose” resistance group fought against the Hitler regime. They loved freedom and life and were very young: 21, 23 and 24 years old. The male and female students had been observed on February 18, 1943, throwing leaflets into the university atrium. “In the name of the entire German people, we demand personal freedom, the most precious asset of the Germans, from the state of Adolf Hitler,” it said. On February 22, 1943, they were tried before the so-called People’s Court. On the same day they were beheaded by a guillotine in the Munich-Stadelheim prison.

On the anniversary of the White Rose, we drive to important sites of resistance against right-wing terror in Munich with Hildegard Kronawitter. The former SPD member of parliament and widow of the long-serving Mayor of Munich, Georg Kronawitter, chairs the White Rose Foundation. We are traveling by taxi and are looking for traces of the young people. We talk about their courage, their final hours and what we can learn from them today.

For the Munich editorial team’s podcast, the People editor Sabine Buchwald, the social editor Jana Jöbstl, as well as Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria departments, take it in turns to pick up their guests at their place of residence or their place of work. They then travel their personal route by tram, bus, subway or S-Bahn or a taxi.

It’s about current projects and very personal plans, about topics that move the city. About your favorite book, your favorite restaurant, your favorite club. The SZ podcast team invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or you are visiting. They come from the fields of politics, gastronomy, culture, sports or media.
