It was eagerly awaited: The first trailer for “Planet of the Apes 4: New Kingdom” promises the usual blockbuster cinema with action, adventure and depth.

The ““Planet of the Apes” saga has cult status. The first part of the science fiction series came out in 1968 and revolutionized the film business of the time. Now – around 55 years after the first part of “Planet of the Apes” – it stands fourth film in the new series in the starting blocks.

“Planet of the Apes 4”: After the peaceful end of the third part, things get uncomfortable

The first trailer that has now been published gives promising insights into the action-packed, magnificently designed blockbuster, which is characterized by a new style in addition to the well-known mix of adventure as well as thoughtful, almost philosophical scenes about ethics and morals. Seven years after the last part, which was directed by “Batman” producer Matt Reeves, “Maze Runner” director Wes Ball has taken a seat in the director’s chair – and given the blockbuster saga a breath of fresh air.

“Planet of the Apes 4: New Kingdom” picks up on the peaceful end of the third part, in which Caesar successfully led his tribe to the holy land in order to be able to live in peace with his fellows from then on. But years later the tide turned. For most of his people, the former hero, who has now died, is only a legend that reminds us of other, bygone times.

Some of the monkeys now living even misuse his values and words to exploit others for their own ends and sometimes even to enslave them. The result is foreseeable: the dissatisfaction and unrest among the people increases due to the lust for power and injustice of individual monkeys, and war breaks out. In the middle of it all is Caesar’s now grown son, Cornelius. He tries to stop the developments with the help of a human child and goes into battle to protect the freedom that his father once worked so hard for.

Excitement and action with depth

The trailer that has now been published gives a first impression of how the mood in the peaceful country is increasingly changing. Dark scenes on the battlefield and barbaric battle cries as well as the desperate Cornelius in the fight against evil promise the usual tension and action with depth. As with the previous parts, “Planet of the Apes 4” once again seems to take up a current social issue – and to illustrate that often only the hatred, selfishness and lust for power of individual individuals are responsible for war and misery.

In the new film, Owen Teague takes on the role of the new main character Cornelius, his companion is played by “The Witcher” star Freya Allan. Also there: William H. Macy (“Fargo”) and “Robin Hood” actor Kevin Durand.

“Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom” is the fourth part of the “reboot triology” that started in 2011, which differs in its own timeline apart from the 1968 original. The films are also particularly characterized by the fact that the monkeys are not embodied by people in costumes – as was the case between 1968 and 1973 and in the heavily criticized remake by Tim Burton in 2001 – but are animated using motion capture.

“Planet of the Apes 4: New Kingdom” opens in German cinemas on May 23, 2024.
