Planegg – rubble recycling in the gravel pit – district of Munich

The environmental committee of the Planegger municipal council is mostly positive about the construction of a mobile rubble recycling plant on the site of the gravel contractor Glück south of Fürstenrieder Straße, but makes its approval conditional. The decision was difficult because recycling rubble is in itself a sensible and environmentally friendly activity – but, some councilors feared, it could also be associated with noise and even more truck traffic in the village.

In February, the company submitted an application to the Munich District Office for the construction of such a system, as required by law. Gravel is already being quarried on the affected area, and there is also a composting plant there, which often gives rise to complaints from the population because it stinks in certain weather conditions. In the mobile plant, building rubble, concrete parts and bricks in particular are to be recycled – up to 200 cubic meters a day. The company refers to the existing infrastructure: access roads, electricity, water, everything is already there. The distance to the next residential building is around 250 meters, earth walls are intended to protect against noise. Some municipal councilors doubted that this could succeed and referred to corresponding experiences with similar systems. In the gravel pit next to it, gravel is mined for another four years, the required backfilling takes eight to nine years.

The discussion in the committee headed towards a compromise: Approval from the municipality will only be granted if the company Glück agrees to a limited use. How long this use lasts, however, is disputed. Happiness wishes for 20 years, a decision has not yet been made. In addition, there should be an urban planning contract between the municipality and the company; Whether further approval procedures are necessary also needs to be clarified. Mayor Hermann Nafziger (CSU) and a majority of local councilors signaled approval, provided the gravel company accepts the restrictions.
