Pierre Hurmic will consult the inhabitants on the burned door of the town hall

What future for the blackened door of the Town Hall? The people of Bordeaux will be consulted on the future of the door of the town hall, burned at the end of March on the sidelines of a demonstration against the pension reform, announced Tuesday in the municipal council the ecological mayor Pierre Hurmic.

The mayor intends to propose to the inhabitants to choose between three scenarios: “redo identically” this wooden structure dating from the 18th century, “repair the burnt door and keep it like this”, in its burnt black appearance, or “install a door resolutely contemporary, which could be the subject of an artists’ competition. “The door of the common house of Bordeaux will be chosen by them”, assured Pierre Hurmic.

A report expected mid-May

Before being submitted to an online vote, these options must however first be “consolidated” by a report that a heritage architect will submit in mid-May and then “validated” by the Regional Department of Cultural Affairs and the Buildings of France, warned the mayor EELV. “At this stage, we cannot make any estimate on the amount and schedule of the work,” he added.

The massive wooden door of the town hall of Bordeaux had been set on fire on the evening of March 23, after a day of demonstration against the pension reform enamelled with excesses and a few days before the visit to France, in particular to Bordeaux, of King Charles III of England, finally canceled the next day.

The disaster, the images of which had been widely taken up on social networks and in the media, had lasted about fifteen minutes before being extinguished by the firefighters. Four men have been charged for their alleged role in the fire.

“If we cannot repair the burned door, we will keep it in one of our museums because it now belongs to the history of Bordeaux residents”, also indicated Pierre Hurmic, elected in 2020.
