Pharmacies: Why pharmacists are protesting – Economy

It only takes a few questions and Sylvia Trautmann, 58, tells of her anger – and her worries. A lot has built up over the years. The pharmacist from Dresden is annoyed about fixed prices and discount agreements for medicines. You can feel the effects they have first hand. Like doctors, midwives, nurses, paramedics and other healthcare professionals, pharmacists are the outposts of the healthcare system. You stand where a highly regulated, complex system meets people. “We do a lot more than hand out the medication that the doctor has prescribed,” says Trautmann. She specializes in naturopathy and produces many individual medicines in her laboratory. “We are on site and also advise our patients on self-medication. Some customers entrust me with their personal concerns.”
