Peter Kloeppel, one of the country’s most important news presenters, is quitting. “The end of August is my last broadcast,” said the RTL presenter in a farewell interview with star. He may still do projects now and then, but he will give up his daily role in the news. “I’ll be 66 this year. That’s good then.”

Ulrike von der Groeben, who ran news programs with Kloeppel for years, is also retiring from TV. About her, Kloeppel says: “I will miss her. She is much louder and funnier than me, much more impulsive.” The two will present together for the last time on RTL in August.

Kloeppel announced that he wanted to live mostly in the USA in the future so that he could spend more time with his wife and daughter. The 65-year-old said his stay there recently felt “like a pleasant cooldown pool.” “They only know me there as Peter from Germany – not as a TV person.”

Peter Kloeppel: “If I become a news presenter, I want to be the best”

In the starinterview, Kloeppel also spoke very personally about his work. He once went into television “because I had the feeling that I was good at it.” The moderator role was not planned. “But what I told myself: If I become a news anchor, I want to be the best.”

Regarding his image as a matter-of-fact journalist, Kloeppel said: “Sometimes I would like to be more out of myself in the television studio. That’s not me, I know. But I openly admit: “I would sometimes like to be as anarchist as Jan Böhmermann.” Impress him , when someone deals with world politics in a satirical way. “These are sometimes the moments in which I think: Man, if you were to do something new again, it would be something crazy.” Kloeppel has moderated the news program RTL Aktuell since 1992. He was also from 2004 to 2014 Editor-in-chief of RTL.

The Farewell interview read in the new stern – and from Wednesday morning on stern.de.
