In the Marvel film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” director James Gunn shows brutal animal experiments on the raccoon Rocket. He received an award from the animal rights organization Peta for this portrayal.

For more than 40 years, the organization PETA has been campaigning for animal rights worldwide – and has usually made a name for itself by criticizing abuses. However, the makers of the science fiction action film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3” are expressly praised by animal rights activists.

Director James Gunn receives the “Not a Number” award from PETA, which the animal rights organization gives out in honor of animals that companies conduct animal experiments on. It is particularly about the portrayal of the raccoon Rocket Raccon in the third part of the film series, which was released in cinemas last week. The film is a “masterpiece of animal rights,” according to a press release from PETA.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” shows experiments on Raccoon Rocket

In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3”, the scientist High Evolutionary is shown experimenting on Rocket and other animals in order to create a superior species from them. The raccoon is treated there like a number, explains Peta – a practice used by researchers to emotionally distance themselves from the sentient beings they are experimenting with. “Through Rocket, James Gunn has given millions of endangered animals being dragged through the labs a face, a name and a personality,” PETA vice president Lisa Lange said.

Animals are shown to the audience as individuals, and the film also shows that “just because we can experiment with them doesn’t mean we should.” Without revealing too much about the plot of the film: As the Marvel production progresses, the raccoon rebels against his tormentors. From Peta’s point of view, it is also an inspiration for human viewers to protest against animal experiments.
