According to the animal protection organization PETA, Schalke 04 has the most vegan-friendly stadium in Germany. Rival Borussia Dortmund is in second place. At Union Berlin and TSG Hoffenheim, on the other hand, there is a need for development.

The Animal welfare organization Peta fights for animal rights and vegan nutrition in all areas of society. The radical organization also has an eye on football, which is generally known as the hotbed of sausage consumption. The stadium sausage is an integral part of football culture. In order to combat this grievance from PETA’s point of view, the animal welfare organization gives an annual award to football clubs whose stadiums have the best vegan offerings.

According to PETA, the range of purely vegan dishes is evaluated. Chips, ice cream or candy bars are not considered. French fries and pretzels are included, but are rated lower than the vegan falafel wraps. The result is a ranking that once again sees Schalke 04 at the top, very different from the sporting ranking. After just one season, the Royal Blues were relegated to the 2nd division again.

  1. Schalke 04
  2. Borussia Dortmund
  3. 1.FSV Mainz 05
  4. RB Leipzig
  5. Hertha BSC Berlin
  6. FC Bayern Munich
  7. VfL Wolfsburg
  8. VfB Stuttgart
  9. Sc freiburg
  10. Bayer 04 Leverkusen
  11. VfL Bochum
  12. 1. FC Cologne
  13. SV Werder Bremen
  14. Borussia Monchengladbach
  15. 1.FC Union Berlin
  16. TSG Hoffenheim

Peta praises “treats” such as the vegan fillet strips with curry coconut sauce and noodles, vegan lahmacun, vegan grilled vegetable wraps and vegan currywurst with jalapeño sauce, which are offered in the Veltins Arena. Borussia Dortmund’s Signal-Iduna-Park can’t quite keep up, but is doing well overall. Peta praises the vegan chilli con carne, Ćevapčići pockets, Cig-Kofte and the sweet Martins pretzels.

Peta is critical of Hoffenheim

In the table cellar, the vegan offer is rather meager. 1. FC Union Berlin and TSG Hoffenheim rank there. The Berliners, who are experiencing an impressive rise in sport and qualified for the Champions League last season, have some catching up to do when it comes to vegan food options. It used to be better. But since the covered apple pie and carrot cake were removed from the program in the stadium at the Alte Försterei, Union has rushed down the table. This is not compensated by the flatbread with tofu and pesto.

The same applies to Hoffenheim. The Kraichgauers only serve vegan sausage or fries. According to Peta, that’s just not enough to be rated higher. Hoffenheim has an urgent need to catch up in all respects. To be fair, one has to add: Hoffenheim also doesn’t have as many fans as Schalke or Dortmund who have to be satisfied.
