On 24 pages, EU Regulation No. 543/2011 specifies in detail what an apple must look like and be like for sale on the European market. The set of rules is a template for Eurosceptics and those who suspect Brussels to be nothing but alienated politicians and unworldly bureaucrats. But that doesn’t go far enough. Just as it would be too simplistic to just point the finger at the South Tyrolean apple farmers now that there is a great deal of data showing that they continue to spray pesticides on their plantations. Because both EU bureaucrats and apple farmers only do what the majority of consumers demand of them. We as a society behave unethically.
