The police broke up a gathering of several hundred opponents of the corona measures in downtown Munich. According to BR reporters, batons and pepper spray were also used.
The police had previously cordoned off Marienplatz in the center and asked those gathered to submit their personal details. The escalation occurred when groups of people who were obviously prepared to use violence repeatedly approached the police barriers and tried to break through them. According to police spokesman Andreas Franken, at least one officer was injured.
Police called for the gathering to be dissolved
Initially, the police announced the current general decree of the city of Munich, according to which non-registered, stationary and moving demonstrations are prohibited. Then there were whistles, boos and protests. “Freedom” calls could also be heard.
No one obeyed the police’s request to disperse voluntarily. The police then dissolved the unregistered meeting and cordoned off Marienplatz.
1,000 officers in action
Around 1,000 officers were on duty. According to the police, there were a total of around 3,000 opponents of the corona measures in downtown Munich.
Only about 30 people came to a registered rally on Theresienwiese. A car parade, which was also registered, took place with around 40 vehicles, which were accompanied by the police.
Counter-demonstration with around 400 participants
Around 400 people gathered at Odeonsplatz for a counter-demonstration under the motto “Munich in solidarity”. People showed signs like: “The nursing staff and doctors also need a break” or “Vaccinations instead of ranting.” The police had demarcated the area with barrier tape.
