The former US President Barack Obama has highlighted trust as a key component for democracies. “We have to build trust because that is essential for a democracy,” he said in front of almost 3,800 spectators in the Danish town of Næstved. It can increasingly be seen that one’s own interests and power are being put first. “The most extreme examples, of course, are countries like Putin’s Russia, which challenge the idea that democracy is somehow worth preserving,” Obama told the packed arena. Democracy is based on social trust, which is based on agreeing on what is true and what is a lie.

Regarding the upcoming US elections in November, Obama only said on Friday: “I think the public knows where I stand on this.” The Democrat was US President from 2009 to 2017.

As part of the event “An Evening With President Obama”, the 62-year-old traveled to Denmark to talk about current political issues. There was also a similar event in Berlin in May 2023.

Obama also spoke on the topic of climate: “Even with a problem like climate change, as urgent as it is, we can’t think: ‘Either we’ll do it perfectly or we’ll do nothing’, ‘Either everything will be successful or we’ll give up.’ “.
