A vase is for sale at “Bares for Rares”. The unusual piece turns out to be an art object – and achieves a fantastic price.

This object is no longer wanted: Annegret Appel from Laatzen comes to “Bares für Rares” with an old heirloom. “It’s not too difficult for me to part with the vase,” says the pensioner in the ZDF junk show to Horst Lichter. The unusual vase was given to her grandparents for their wedding. But it does not match your furnishing style. But the vase is anything but an item for the junk – it is a valuable art object.

“It’s a vase with a very unusual decor,” says “Bares for Rares” expert Bianca Berding. The shape that imitates a tree trunk around which a snake is winding is also rare. The iridescent decor is created by silver that has been applied to the vase. The vase was made around 1900 in Art Nouveau style by the Loetz company in Bohemia and was hand-blown. “The fact that the signature is missing is not a problem,” says Berding. Today it is a highly sought-after collector’s item.

“Bares for Rares” expert is much higher

It is difficult for the owner Appel to name a price. “If I get a thousand for it, it would be great,” says the 75-year-old. But she would also be satisfied with less. But the expert Berding disagrees with that. Because their estimated price is between 2000 and 2200 euros. But what are the dealers willing to pay?

“It’s a shame, it’s not signed,” says Bares für Rares dealer Fabian Kahl. But his colleague Markus Wildhagen explains: “They only signed for export.” Julian Schmitz-Avila starts with a bid of 300 euros. Only when Appel mentions the expertise does the bids get going. Wildhagen offers 1000 euros, Schmitz-Avila increases it to 1100 euros, then Kahl steps in and offers 1500 euros. But there is more to come. Schmitz-Avila was only awarded the contract for 1750 euros.

Saleswoman Appel is satisfied with the selling price. It came pretty close to the estimate. “Great.”
