Just recently there was good news for the approximately 21 million pensioners in Germany: their retirement benefits will be increased significantly from July – by 5.35 percent in western Germany and by 6.12 percent in eastern Germany. But now a number of them are getting a damper: Because also from July onwards, around 103,000 pensioners will only be taxed because of the upcoming pension increase – because this will cause them to exceed the tax allowance. Overall, the number of pensioners who have to pay taxes on their retirement benefits will rise to around six million in 2022, as the Federal Ministry of Finance announced in response to a question from the left-wing social politician in the Bundestag, Sören Pellmann. For the state, this means additional income of 730 million euros, a new record. The Funke media group first reported on this.
