Well then, have a good flight: Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and the director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Sandra Oudkirk, bid farewell to US politician Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday. Despite all the criticism, many here were happy about the visit and its message.

So now Nancy Pelosi is gone again – and Taiwan is still standing. But for Xi Jinping, the old lady’s visit was exactly what he doesn’t need right now. So it could be that the short stopover has a longer aftermath.

It’s typhoon season in Taiwan. For days, the news often deals with little other than the question: is the hurricane approaching from the southeast coming to Taiwan or not? So in Taipei, the joke went through the net as to whether this was a particularly dangerous typhoon, this announced “Pelosi”, of which nobody knew until the end whether it was really coming to Taiwan or whether it would turn off towards South Korea at the last moment .
