Pekka Haavisto: Will DJ Pexi become Finland’s possible new president?

Finns will elect their president on Sunday. He has an important role to play, especially in these historic times. Pekka Haavisto has the best chances for the office and also the strangest path behind him: Will he make it from the gas station to the club to the top of the state?

Friday evening, a small concert hall in a hip neighborhood of Helsinki. At the last appearance of his tour, DJ Pexi opens his set as usual, with the title song by Inspector Palmu, a Finnish film hero from the 60s. With his shirt and jacket, he looks a bit overambitious behind the mixing desk. But this man seems to be well received by the guests. As before in Turku, in Tampere, or high up in Rovaniemi in Lapland.

Just two days after his gig in Helsinki, DJ Pexi no longer just wants to face the judgment of club visitors – but of all Finns. He wants to be elected as the new president of Finland. His real name is Pekka Haavisto and he is 65 years old.
