Peißenberg: Two dead in a fire in a residential building – Bavaria

On Saturday evening, residents on Hans-Böckler-Strasse in Peißenberg heard loud bangs like explosions – and discovered firelight on the second floor of an apartment building. Several callers alerted the police around 9 p.m., the police headquarters in Oberbayern Süd told the SZ. When the officials drove up with the fire brigade, nothing more could be heard from the explosions. The noise was probably caused by fire gases, according to the police. The apartment on the second floor was on fire.

While the fire was still being extinguished, the firefighters discovered two people in the apartment, but they could not be saved. The dead have not yet been identified. Three other residents came to the hospital with suspected smoke poisoning, and other residents were cared for by the Red Cross on site.

After the fire was extinguished and a structural engineer had examined the building, most of the residents were able to return to their apartments. But the Federal Agency for Technical Relief had to secure some balconies that are in danger of falling. According to initial estimates, the property damage to the house with 24 apartments should be in the high six-digit range.

Fire investigators from the criminal police are now investigating how the fire could have started.
