The socialist prime minister will probably keep his office – but only because he is doing what he had ruled out before the election: he is making a pact with separatists who now want to vote again on the secession of Catalonia.

After the parliamentary elections in the summer, there was a noticeable sigh of relief in Spain. All radical forces had lost, left and right as well as most of the separatist regional parties. The vast majority of Spaniards voted for the middle, for moderation, for cohesion. And now, four months later, they get the opposite: a deeply divided country.
