The war in Ukraine is moving deeper and is thus approaching the fighting of the First World War in another aspect. Bunkers and trenches are known as a means of warfare in Ukraine, and now the Russians are also supposed to create attack and approach tunnels. Ukrainian news agency Unian quotes 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade spokesman Anton Kotsukon on the situation near Avdiivka: “They are digging tunnels closer to our positions, firstly for the purpose of camouflage and secondly in order to unexpectedly appear somewhere closer to our positions.” On the Ukrainian side, the 110th Mechanized Brigade is bearing the brunt of the fighting for the city. This means that the tunnel war reappears, a form of fighting that became known again through the successful series “Peaky Blinders”.
