Patriarch Kirill and the “Holy War” against Ukraine – Culture

Just days after the Islamist terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall at the end of March, Patriarch Kirill and senior hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROK) have significantly strengthened their theological justification for the war against Ukraine. Parallel to the massive military build-up and the expansion of mobilization, the Orthodox Church is apparently also arming itself – rhetorically. At a special meeting of the World Council of the Russian People (WKRV) on March 27 in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, a Declaration of Principles on “The Present and Future of the Russian World” was adopted and sent to the legislative and executive branches of the Russian Federation. It speaks of a “holy war” and categorically rules out state independence for Ukraine.
