The regular parties in Downing Street during the Corona lockdowns kept political London in suspense for a long time. Now the police have completed the investigation – and Prime Minister Boris Johnson is not getting off scot-free.

In the “Partygate” affair about banned celebrations during the corona lockdown in Downing Street, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has to pay a fine. This was confirmed by a government spokeswoman on Tuesday, according to the British news agency PA. According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, fines were imposed in a total of 50 cases for violations of the corona measures in force at the time.

Johnson had come under heavy pressure from the Partygate affair. He also had to defend himself against calls for his resignation from within his Conservative Party, as he is said to have tolerated regular parties at his official residence and is said to have attended some. However, since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Johnson has been firmly in the saddle again.

Boris Johnson: Investigations are ongoing

According to the Metropolitan Police, they are investigating twelve events from 2020 and 2021. At that time, there were strict contact restrictions in the wake of the pandemic. Questionnaires had been sent to more than 100 government workers and employees, including Johnson and his wife.

The investigation is still ongoing, further fines could follow. Efforts are being made to advance the investigation as quickly as possible, said Scotland Yard on Tuesday. In most cases, it is said to be a fine of 50 pounds (60 euros).
