In 2020 he was elected Prime Minister with the votes of the AfD – and held his position for a month. Now the FDP has chosen Kemmerich as the top candidate for the upcoming state elections.

Thuringia’s former short-term Prime Minister According to the wishes of his state association, Thomas Kemmerich should lead the FDP as the top candidate in the 2024 state election campaign. At a state party conference in Friedrichroda in Thuringia on Saturday, the majority of delegates voted in favor of a corresponding proposal by a show of hands. Four voters voted against and there was one abstention. According to party information, 136 voters were present. Kemmerich’s candidacy will be sealed at a list party conference next year.

Thomas Kemmerich, who was born in Aachen, was Prime Minister of Thuringia for almost a month in 2020 after members of the CDU, AfD and FDP elected him. Kemmerich accepted the election, even though the AfD’s votes were decisive. The FDP politician was unable to form a government and did not name any ministers. He announced his resignation one day after his election, which he resigned a few days later. During this time, Thuringia plunged into a deep government crisis.
