Former left faction leader Wagenknecht is thinking about founding a party. The Left party executive wants her to give up her seat in the Bundestag. Internally, however, this was met with criticism.

The deputy head of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Gesine Lötzsch, has criticized her party’s board decision against MP Sahra Wagenknecht. “The decision of the party executive does not lead to a solution. And above all, it is ineffective in the matter,” said Lötzsch on Monday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”.

Lötzsch campaigned for Wagenknecht to remain involved in the party in the future. Wagenknecht attracts a lot of people, said Lötzsch. “The left should actually have an interest in keeping a comrade like Sahra Wagenknecht.”

In addition, the 61-year-old spoke of “fear that a split will continue, that the board of directors will split the party, but also the parliamentary group, with its decision”. One should not carelessly jeopardize a parliamentary group, said Lötzsch. “If we were no longer a faction, we would have far fewer resources to work in public.”

The background to the internal dispute about the former parliamentary group leader Wagenknecht is her flirting with the founding of a new party. On Saturday, the Left Board broke with her and called on her and her fellow campaigners to return their mandates: “The future of the Left is a future without Sahra Wagenknecht,” says the resolution.

Lötzsch said only Wagenknecht herself could decide to resign from the Bundestag.
