Surprise at the parliamentary elections in Bulgaria. Contrary to what the polls expected, a new anti-corruption party was winning.

In Bulgaria a new anti-corruption party won the parliamentary elections. In what was already the third election this year, the party “We are continuing the change” (PP) received a good 25 percent of the vote on Sunday – much more than expected according to the polls.

The bourgeois GERB of ex-head of government Boiko Borissow, who was voted out in April, came in second with 22 percent, according to the official interim results published on Monday. The final result is not expected until later this week.

The PP co-chair, Kiril Petkov, is now considered a possible future prime minister. Petkow is aiming for a coalition government without the GERB. The graduate of the US elite Harvard University was once economics minister in a transitional cabinet from May to September. A total of seven parties are likely to have overcome the four percent hurdle for entry into parliament.
