On August 24, 1991, the independence of Ukraine was proclaimed. This is why the City of Paris has chosen this same date, this Thursday, to rename the garden around the Petit-Palais (8th arrondissement), “Garden of Kyiv – to the Ukrainian People”.

In a Press releasethe city included this approach in a long list of acts of support for Ukrainians: “After having released exceptional emergency aid of one million euros for Ukrainians from the start of the war, the City also signed a pact of friendship and cooperation with Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, where the mayor of Paris visited at the beginning of April 2022.
A visit that she will renew twice, the last of which was last April. Invited by the Ukrainian presidency, the city councilor had received from the hands of President Volodymyr Zelensky the title of “city saviour” on behalf of the City of Paris before meeting with the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko.
To celebrate this new proof of the friendship between the two cities, the Eiffel Tower will also be put to use and illuminated in the colors of Ukraine in the evening, in the presence of Anne Hidalgo and Vadym Omelchenko, Ambassador of Ukraine in France. These celebrations take place on the eve of another important and symbolic date, that of the Liberation of Paris.
