The Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicated this Sunday following the fire which left four dead and 61 injured in the Iranian prison of Evin. A prison where the Franco-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah is notably imprisoned.
“France has followed and continues to follow this situation with the greatest attention, in conjunction with the families of our detainees” and “once again reminds the Iranian authorities that they are responsible for the safety and health of our compatriots detained in Iran,” said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Five French people imprisoned in Iran
Paris “reiterates its demands for the immediate release of its nationals” and “also reminds Iran of its responsibilities with regard to all the prisoners of Evin, including those who are incarcerated there for political reasons”. Five French people are currently being held in Iran, Minister Catherine Colonna announced on France Inter on Tuesday, whereas until now only four were officially recognized by Paris.
In addition to the researcher Fariba Adelkhah (sentenced to five years in prison for undermining national security), Benjamin Brière (sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison for espionage), Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, a “Frenchman who was passing through” in Tehran was recently arrested according to the ministry.
