Parents of girl who committed suicide file suit against TikTok

Can justice hold social networks responsible in cases of suicide following situations of harassment? The parents of a 15-year-old girl, who filed a complaint against the social network TikTok, believe him, reports France Info.

Marie, 15, committed suicide in September 2021 in Cassis (Bouches-du-Rhône) in her room. A handful of weeks before her action, the teenager had posted a video on TikTok to express her fed up with being harassed for her weight and to share her discomfort.

For lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion, cited by France Info, “TikTok obviously has its share of responsibility”. She calls into question the power of her algorithm which led the young girl to receive “en masse [d] “Videos which are on the same theme and which can only lead to being even worse.” This complaint, a first in France, is currently being investigated alongside an investigation into acts of school harassment.
