Triathlete Martin Schulz won the first German gold at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo on the fifth day of the competition. Thanks to a race to catch up after swimming 750 meters, cycling 20 kilometers and running five kilometers, the 31-year-old crossed the finish line 45 seconds ahead of Briton George Peasgood and clinched his second Paralympic victory in 58:10 minutes in his post-Rio victory.
Training under extreme conditions
Schulz had specially prepared for the extreme conditions. “I occasionally set up my bike in the swimming pool,” said the man from Leipzig before leaving for Japan: “I did units in a heat tent with a humidifier and a heater. There were 38 degrees and 80 percent humidity,” he explained.
