Table tennis player Valentin Baus won the second gold medal for Germany at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The 25-year-old defeated the Chinese Cao Ningning in the seated class 5.

Table tennis player Valentin Baus made his gold dream come true at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo: The 25-year-old won in the new edition of the Rio finals in 2016 in the starting class 5 against the Chinese Cao Ningning – despite a gap in the meantime with 3: 2. It is the first gold for German table tennis players since London 2012.

Baus clearly won the first set 11: 4 before allowing himself a weak phase in rounds two and three. After that, the Düsseldorf player was the better player again and turned his fourth set ball to equalize 2-2. In the decision-making round, he pulled away early and converted his third match point to 11: 7.

Complete set of medals for German team in individual competition

This means that Germany ends the individual competitions in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium with a complete set of medals. Already yesterday Thomas Schmidberger had lost his final in the starting class three against his Chinese rival Fan Penfeng with 2: 3. Stephanie Grebe won bronze after her 3-0 defeat in the semifinals against European champion Maliak Aliyeva from the Russian Paralympic Committee. The team competitions will continue from Tuesday.
