Palace, torch and cannon shots…. How will the inauguration ceremony of Emmanuel Macron take place?

Under the golds of the Elysée village hall, Emmanuel Macron will be invested this Saturday morning for his second five-year term during a sober ceremony which “is rooted in the history of the Republic”, indicated the Elysium. No long red carpet in the courtyard of the Elysée, nor going up the Champs-Elysées: the moment will be less spectacular than the arrival of a new president welcomed by his predecessor. We take stock.

A prestigious palace

At 11 a.m., Emmanuel Macron will enter the hall, the largest and most prestigious room in the palace, to the sound of the 1st movement of Handel’s oboe concerto.

The 8th president of the Fifth Republic will be the object of all eyes of the 500 people present, standing. There will be his family, including his wife Brigitte, his friends, the members of the government, Jean Castex at the head, as well as the main officials of the assemblies, the constituted and intermediate bodies, the academies, the cults.

beautiful people

Former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande and ex-Prime Minister Edouard Philippe were invited but the Elysée Palace was unable to confirm their presence on Thursday. Caregivers, elected officials, athletes or association leaders were also invited, such as Moussaka Mara of the Determined Cergy (Val-d’Oise), an opportunity to “pay tribute” to the periods crossed during the first five-year term and to insist on the stated priorities of the second (health, education, youth, etc.), according to the presidency.

Cannon shots

The ceremony will begin with the proclamation of the official results of the election by the President of the Constitutional Council Laurent Fabius, who will thus confirm that Emmanuel Macron obtained 58.55% of the votes against Marine Le Pen (RN). The president will be presented with the grand collar of the Legion of Honor making him the grand master of this order – which he has already been since his election in 2017. Then he will deliver a speech which “will not be a general policy speech but “which will be part of the history of the country and will open up to the future”, according to an adviser to the presidency.

On May 15, 2017, during his investiture speech, Macron declared: “Nothing will be conceded to ease or compromise. Nothing will weaken my determination (…) I will have, at the same time, the constant will to reconcile and bring together all the French”.

A trip to the park

At noon, the president will go out into the vast Elysée park to review the troops to the sound of the Marseillaise but also the piece “Terre et mer” from Bagad de Lann-Bihoué, already played during the five-year term to pay tribute to soldiers killed in operations.

And a torch

On Sunday, Emmanuel Macron will go to the Champs-Elysées to rekindle the flame of the unknown soldier on the occasion of the anniversary of the victory of May 8, 1945. This investiture does not mark the start of the new five-year term: it will officially be necessary to wait for the end of the first, on the evening of Friday May 13 at midnight.

The appointment of the new Prime Minister, the subject of all speculation for several days, will only take place from this date. Until then, “the government is at work to act, protect the French, take all the necessary decisions, and the time for individual decisions and appointments has not come,” spokesman Gabriel said on Wednesday. Attal, reporting remarks by the Head of State in the Council of Ministers.
