Pakistan: Criminal proceedings against ex-Prime Minister Khan

Status: 08/22/2022 1:44 p.m

Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Khan has faced accusations since he was ousted from power in April this year. The most recent is: terrorism. The police are investigating.

Pakistani police have accused former Prime Minister Imran Khan of terrorism. The authorities said that criminal proceedings had been initiated. The reason for the allegations is a speech by Khan last Saturday in the capital, Islamabad. At the mass event, he announced that he wanted to sue police officers and a judge. He also alleged that a confidant had been tortured after his arrest.

Familiar faces the death penalty

The familiar is Shebaz Gill. The former cabinet member had publicly called on soldiers to defy the “illegal orders” of the military leadership. He was then accused of high treason, which in Pakistan carries the death penalty. Amnesty International is now calling for an investigation into the allegations of torture.

Khan himself initially did not comment publicly on the allegations. A court in Islamabad ruled that Khan cannot be arrested for the next three days, an official from his Tehreek-e-Insaf party said.

Followers protect Khan’s house

The former prime minister’s party posted videos online showing supporters surrounding Khan’s home to prevent possible police access. Hundreds were there on Monday morning. The party announced nationwide rallies in the event of Khan’s arrest.

Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has warned of the consequences if Khan is charged and arrested. “Imran Khan is our red line,” he wrote on Twitter.

Overthrown by a vote of no confidence

Khan was ousted as prime minister of the South Asian country on April 9 of this year by a vote of no confidence in the Pakistani parliament. Since then, Shebaz Sharif, the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has ruled as the successor to the 69-year-old former cricketer.
