Mesut Özil’s time at Arsenal did not end well, also because of alleged greed. His advisor has now cleared that up.

More than a year after Mesut Özil’s departure from Arsenal FC, his advisor Erkut Sögüt cleared up rumors that the 2014 world champion had rejected a salary waiver at the Gunners during the corona pandemic out of greed for money. Unlike most of the squad, Özil had refused to agree to a 15 percent salary reduction.

“As far as the salary cut is concerned, he asked me where the money went,” said Sögüt in an interview Arsenal fan tv. He continued: “Mesut wanted security from the club that nobody would be fired. The management should also participate in a salary reduction.”

Özil’s adviser: Mesut did not want to finance new players

If this insurance had existed, says Sögüt, Özil would have given up even more money, “30 percent,” as he explains. “He just wanted to know where the money went. He didn’t want a new player to be paid with it. If it had been about securing jobs, he would have done it,” Sögüt clarifies.

Özil left London for Fenerbahce Istanbul in January 2021. Things weren’t going well for the now 33-year-old at the traditional Turkish club either. Fener suspended the playmaker without officially giving a reason, which Özil says according to his own statement only found out later. According to information from GOAL andSPOXCoach Ismail Kartal has been dissatisfied with Özil’s condition for a long time.
